A new season brings with it new beauty trends and there are plenty of fun ones to embrace for spring/summer 2016-17.
Thin eyeliner, bold lashes and luminous, glowing skin will be key makeup looks this season.
For those who like to embrace the more natural look, you’ll be pleased to discover that bushy brows are in and contouring is out.
Like a bit more glam? Then spidery, thick lashes or plump, glossy lips will be your go-to makeup look.
Here are the five beauty trends for spring/summer:
1. Strong, bushy brows
Put those tweezers away and embrace the beauty of the boyish eyebrow. Thicker, squarer, heavier eyebrows are the mainstay of spring/summer, which is great news for those of us with naturally bushy brows.
Tip: If you tend towards thinner brows, invest in a good brow pencil a shade darker than your natural hair colour to achieve this look.
2. Natural, luminous skin
Forget contouring, this spring/summer season is all about a light, dewy-skinned look, also known as ‘non-touring’. The secret to getting the glow is investing in a good highlighter.
Tip: Start with a primer, followed by a tinted moisturiser or a CC or BB cream. After this, sweep highlighter across the areas of the face where the light hits: top of the cheekbones, nose, under the brow-bone, on the top of your cupid’s bow.
3. Glossy lips
It’s a look we haven’t seen in at least a decade, but lips for spring/summer are shiny and glossy, and compliment a dewy face. Go for a lipstick in a neutral shade and add a slick of gloss on top to achieve the look.
Tip: Generously gloss all over the lips, but avoid using too much gloss at the corners of the mouth (you don’t want to look like you’re dribbling!).
4. Bold mascara
The look for eyes this season is minimal make-up on the lids, because it’s all about the lashes. Think Twiggy’s spider lashes of the 1960s, or thicker, voluminous lashes that are so playful and retro they could be faux.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to try a coloured lash this season, and sweep the lower lashes too. Unlike your dewy skin, you don’t want your lashes to look natural.
5. Thin eyeliner
Makeup on the catwalks this season was a thinner eyeliner with a ‘kitten flick’. A shorter version of the ‘cat eye’, the kitten flick looks almost like you’re wearing false lashes when viewed from the side.
Tip: Using liquid liner, paint a very thin line which gets a little bit thicker as it extends to just outside the crease of the eyelid, sweeping up.
